PRETORIA, South Africa — Collen Mashawana, a businessman and philanthropist, is on a mission to transform South Africa through a combination of entrepreneurship, innovation, and social responsibility. At just 39 years old, Mashawana became one of the continent’s most influential figures, recognized not only for his business acumen but also for his tireless work in uplifting marginalized communities.

Born in the small town of Itsani in South Africa, Mashawana’s rise to prominence is a testament to his determination. “Growing up, I didn’t have many opportunities, but I always knew that education and hard work could change my circumstances,” Mashawana reflects in  an interview. “I wanted to create something bigger than myself.”

Mashawana’s entrepreneurial journey began in the early 2000s, when he founded his first business in the transport and logistics industry. His company, Mashawana Logistics, quickly grew into a significant player in the sector, specializing in supply chain management for both local and international companies. By focusing on efficiency, customer service, and scalable solutions, Mashawana transformed his small business into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. But his ambitions didn’t stop there.

In 2015, Mashawana expanded his interests into various sectors, including real estate, mining, and technology. Through his holding company, the Mashawana Group, he has built a diverse portfolio that spans industries crucial to Africa’s economic development. “I’ve always believed in finding ways to make things work for Africa—whether it’s through business or through impactful projects,” Mashawana explains.

Despite his growing business empire, Mashawana remains deeply committed to his philanthropic work. As the founder of the Collen Mashawana Foundation, he has spearheaded several initiatives focused on education, youth empowerment, and health in underdeveloped areas across Southern Africa. One of the foundation’s most notable projects is a scholarship program that supports thousands of students who lack access to quality education. “Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty,” Mashawana says. “I want to make sure that every child in Africa has a chance to learn, grow, and succeed.”

Mashawana’s focus on social impact has garnered praise from both local and international leaders. In 2020, he was named one of Africa’s “Top 100 Most Influential Entrepreneurs” by Forbes Africa, a recognition of his exceptional contributions to business and philanthropy. “Collen is a visionary,” says Thuli Madonsela, former Public Protector of South Africa. “He has a unique ability to bridge the gap between business success and social responsibility, and that’s something we need more of in Africa.”

While many African business leaders focus on economic gain, Mashawana has made it his life’s work to ensure that his success benefits those who need it the most. “Africa is a continent with immense potential,” he says. “We have the resources, the talent, and the drive to shape our own future. The real challenge is creating systems that empower everyone to reach their full potential.”

Mashawana’s efforts have already begun to bear fruit. Through his ventures, he has created thousands of jobs, partnered with local communities on sustainable projects, and invested in initiatives that promote digital literacy and infrastructure development. “We need to make sure that the next generation is prepared for the challenges ahead,” he says. “Technology and innovation are key to Africa’s future.”

As Mashawana looks to the next phase of his career, he remains focused on scaling his businesses while furthering his philanthropic mission. “I’m just getting started,” he says with a determined smile. “There’s still a lot of work to do.”
